Matt Hamel got his first sled dog in 2007, and began scootering and skijoring that season.   On late, rainy, cold nights after the little dogs go to bed, you could find him training on the scooter around Green Lake in Seattle.  After racing the 2-dog circuit for a couple of years, the enjoyment of longer mile runs, and the opportunity to borrow and train some awesome long-distance dogs has brought him to the 6-mid class.  He has won the NWSDA Championships several times in the 2-dog and 6-mid classes, and was the 2012-13 Pacific Northwest Championship 6-mid Champion, competing in races in Oregon, Idaho and Washington.
Matt lives in Seattle, and is married to Tyra Sorensen.  They have two daughters, Aurora, 6, and Athena, 3.  Both of the girls have gotten the sled dog bug – Aurora even ran her first race at 4 years old.  Matt is an historic preservation architect, and enjoys skiing, blacksmithing and gardening.
